Francisco Goya Playing Cards

PLAYING CARDS celebrating the work of Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (1746–1828), one of the most important Spanish artists between Velázquez and Picasso and a defining figure in the transition from Old Master painting to modern art. Court painter to the Spanish monarchy, Goya chronicled both the authority and fragility of power with unmatched psychological insight.

His royal portraits, including figures such as Charles IV of Spain and Ferdinand VII, reveal not idealised grandeur but human presence—hesitation, vanity and vulnerability beneath the surface of rank. In Goya’s hands, portraiture becomes direct, observational and strikingly modern in its honesty.

Alongside his court work, Goya developed a darker and more radical visual language. In Los Caprichos, he satirised superstition, corruption and social pretence. In The Disasters of War, he documented the brutality of conflict without heroism or justification, producing one of the most powerful anti-war image cycles in art history. His final Black Paintings, created in isolation, push this vision further into psychological intensity and unease.

This pack of Goya playing cards features 54 carefully selected works, spanning royal portraits, etchings and key compositions from across his career. Each card reflects his extraordinary ability to combine observation, emotion and social commentary.

A distinctive and compelling gift for lovers of Spanish art, history and psychological realism, and a powerful addition to any collection of art playing cards.
