The Modern Turn Collector Set brings together three defining approaches to modern design: Bauhaus, Piet Mondrian and Art Deco.
Each deck explores a different response to the changing world of the early 20th century. Bauhaus brought art, craft and industry together, developing furniture, architecture, typography and household objects around function and economical design. Mondrian pursued a radical abstraction of form and colour, reducing painting to grids, rectangles and primary colours through the De Stijl movement. Art Deco embraced geometry, symmetry, luxury and new materials, giving modernity a more decorative and glamorous expression across architecture, interiors, fashion and design.
The three approaches could look very different, but they belong to the same great transformation in modern art and design. Traditional ornament and academic conventions were challenged by new ideas about abstraction, technology, industry and everyday life. The result was a new understanding of what modern design could be.
The connections between these movements make the set particularly rewarding to collect. Mondrian’s geometric abstraction influenced the development of modern design and the Bauhaus, while Art Deco offered its own response to the machine age through bold geometry, craftsmanship and ornament. Seen together, the three decks show the extraordinary range of the modernist revolution.
