Over the centuries the pastime of playing cards has inspired great artists like Paul Cézanne [▲ Les joueurs de carte, 1892-95] and Pablo Picasso [The Card Player, 1913/14]. Graphic designers have adapted card motifs on other products to remarkable effect. Playing cards themselves have been designed by major artists including Hockney and Peter Blake. Box design is crucial, for both impact and information, and our designers – Bob Haime and Rosie Smith of HAIME & BUTLER DESIGNERS [www.haime-butler.com], Nina Craythorne at MYCHI [www.mychi.co.uk] Dan Mulcahy and now Dot Little of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, have succeeded in this sensitive and challenging graphic art.
